A 2 hour, 5 km one-way guided geotrail and nature walk from Nobbys Beach to the Bogey Hole along the beautiful Newcastle coast.

  • Explore the rocks that tell stories of ancient volcanic eruptions, lush Gondwanan forests, vast rivers and mountains, and the splitting of Australia and New Zealand.

  • Escape to our dynamic coast, along beaches and rock platforms.

  • Experience how the geological history has shaped human history in our region, and how plants and animals rely on our coast for life.

The meeting point for the Newcastle Coastal Geotrail Discovery Tour is on the grass on the beach side of the main entrance (under the clock) to Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club (Nobbys SLSC). The tour is a one-way tour, and will finish at the Bogey Hole.

  • Paid parking is available in the car park near Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club, or along nearby streets in the east end of Newcastle. Free parking is available in King Edward Park near the finish point of the walk at the Bogey Hole.

  • Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club is well-connected by bike paths around the Newcastle foreshore.

  • The starting point at Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club is a ~10 minute walk from the Newcastle Beach stop on the light rail. The Newcastle Beach stop on the light rail is a ~20 minute walk from the Bogey Hole finishing point.

The tour is a mostly easy walk along Bathers Way (flat, paved surface) with an optional short beach walk and an optional rock platform walk. Currently, Bathers Way is closed along Newcastle South for upgrade. As a result, the walk will proceed through Fletcher and King Edward parks – this includes a moderate incline and decline. This walk is accessible for prams and strollers, but unfortunately it is currently not accessible for people with mobility issues.

Water taps and toilets are located along this walk, including at Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club, Newcastle Ocean Baths, Newcastle Surf Club and in King Edward Park.
